indirect lighting

Indirect lighting is one of the best ways to create a warm and cosy environment in your house. There is a big difference between the effects of direct light and indirect light. Indirect lighting aims to give light away from the eye, bouncing it off to another surface first. There are two main categories for indirect lighting, and you should be aware of these if you are interested in interior design ideas. The first category is fixtures that are designed to give indirect light, for example wall sconces. The second category is fixtures that are not designed that way, but can be adapted to give indirect light, for example fluorescent tubes and rope lighting.

Rope lighting can be used to highlight certain areas of a room. It is made of a string of incandescent bulbs or LED lights that are place inside a tube made of plastic. These can be found in various lengths. If you buy rope lighting, you should also buy the right accessories in order to attach the piece to a power source.

Sometimes rope lighting pieces are shorter and they have a plug attached to them. These can be added inside a cupboard or cabinet, they can be placed under a shelf or attached along the steps of the stairs. This is a practical solution you can use to enlighten critical places that are a bit dark.

Cove lighting is a type of lighting that is built into ledges and recesses in rooms that have ceilings higher than eight feet. By using cove lighting, you can crown a room with an even light, without letting the fixture show itself. This provides a cosy and romantic environment in many places. If your room does not already have a cove, you can create it by adding a thick crown molding along your walls. Cove lighting can be made with rope lighting, xenon low voltage fixtures and fluorescent tubes.

Another type is wall washing. Its kind of opposite to cove lighting. The cove is flipped downwards, so the light “washes” the wall instead of the ceiling.

Whichever type of indirect lighting you choose for your interior design, make sure that the light fits your needs, according to how you use the room, and how you want it to look. And don’t forget you can always add some extra lamps and lights for spots that need extra lighting for reading or studying.
